From Nov. 09
Lead Lookdev TD
Framestore, London, UK
Project: Your Highness
softwares: Maya, Nuke, PRman, fRibGen (proprietary)

I am currently doing the lookdev of a creature and making sure everything is ready for the cruise-speed lighting production of the shots. The complexity lies in the fact that the creature evolves throughout the sequence (changes shape and textures). Working with Maya, Nuke and prman (the rib-exporter in an in-house tool).

Senior Lookdev-Lighting TD
Framestore, London, UK
Project: Avatar
Oscar, Best Visual Effects, 2010
softwares: Maya, PRman, fRibGen (proprietary)

On Avatar, I started doing lookdev. This was particularly challenging because we received from Weta the models and textures, and I had to find out how the "ingredient" were used to achieve the same look. I also designed and developed some workflow tools specific for the production both for the lookdev and lighting teams. I wrote a few coshaders, or modified existing shaders into coshaders for the production. And I also did the lighting of shots.

Lead Lighting TD
Framestore, London, UK
Project: Where the Wild Things Are
softwares: Maya, Liquid, PRman

I have done the lookdev of a character, lead a small team (assigning shots, making sure of the quality and consistency), and lighting shots of course. The elements that were full CG were the eyes and lips. The rest of the face was rendered as well, but were using the filmed images. This was a great work of integration.

Winter 09
Shader Writer
Project: The Hunt For Gollum

I wrote the shaders for the few shots where Gollum appears. They were for the skin, eyes, hair, and the lights. Fun project. This is a fan film without budget, so this is a non-professional experience.

June 08 to Nov. 08
Lighting Supervisor
(similar to Lead Lighting TD on other projects)
Framestore, London, UK
Project: The Tale of Despereaux
softwares: Maya, Liquid, Shake, PRman

My tasks included assigning shots and ensuring of their progress, finding solutions and methods for challenging shots (which required writing shaders and scripts), giving artistic feedback and solving technical problems (examining ribs, shaders, maya scenes, pointclouds, etc.). I lead a team of about 10 people. Needless to say that I also lit shots. I dealt with a great amount of information.

Sept. 07 to May 08
Lighting Technical Director
Framestore-CFC, London, UK
Project: The tale of Despereaux
softwares: Maya, Liquid, PRman

I was in fact in the surfacing department, doing some lookdev, creating shaders and writing some tools (MEL script). The surfacing work per se didn't include shader writing.

Nov. 06 to July 07
Pipeline Technical Director
Beyond FX, Montreal, Canada
Project: Empire Earth III
softwares: Maya, 3Delight, Digital Fusion

I developed the pipeline (shading, lighting, rendering and compositing pipeline) for the cinematic of Empire Earth III. I chose to implement a renderman pipeline, using 3Delight (and 3Delight for Maya). The team was very small, my tasks were thus multiple, but consisted primarily of problem solving, shader writing (RSL), developing tools (MEL and Python), optimizing and preparing the assets and scenes for the different steps of the process. I also have done some lookdev, lighting and compositing.

June 06 to Oct. 06
Lighting Technical Director
Animal Logic, Sydney, Australia
Project: Happy Feet (feature film)
Oscar, Best Animated Feature Film, 2007
softwares: Maya, Mayaman, Digital Fusion, PRMan, It

Starting from a master light rig, I created the lighting setup of the shots in Maya, and did the setup the different render passes through MEL scripting. After the renders were completed, I composited them with Digital Fusion. Most of the lighting happened really at this stage.
I had the chance, before the end of my contract, to do a key light, which means that I had to create the light rig, the scene setup MEL script, the base script for the management of the render passes, the reference compositing script, and, of course, the look of the sequence.
This work involved a lot of programming and compositing through the lighting process.

Nov. 04 to Feb. 06
Lead Lighting Artist
Modelink (TAARNA studios), Montreal, Canada
Project: Free Jimmy (feature film)
softwares: Maya, Mtor, Slim, Alfred, Photoshop, 3Delight, i-Display

Following the director and the supervisor's indications, I created "master" light sets that were used by the lighting team. I also assigned shots to lighting artists and kept track of their progress, as well as gave them feedbacks and directions on their work. I solved as much technical problems as possible. No rendering passes were used on this projet, thus a high degree of control was needed at the lighting stage.

Mai 04 to July 04
Lighting Artist
DAMN FX!, Montreal, Canada
Project: Fungus the Bogeyman (tv series)
softwares: Maya, Muster, Photoshop

Under the supervision of the lead lighting artist and the directions of the artistic director, I had to create light sets for the assigned shots. I used "master" lightsets to ensure continuity between shots. The shots had to be prepared for the rendering stage.

Sept. 03 to Nov. 03
Lighting Artist
Lone Monkey Studios, Montreal, Canada
Project: Fungus the Bogeyman (tv series)
softwares: Maya

I created light sets within a short frame of time, without much supervision. It was a great experience though.
